On May 13th 2008 John Curran was appointed as Minister of State with special responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs at the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs.
On the 24th of May 2007 John Curran was re-elected to Dáil Éireann. Once again John topped the poll in the growing Dublin Mid-West constituency when he received 8650 first preference votes. This represented over 23% of all votes cast. John was the first TD to be elected a seat in the 29th Dáil.
Once more John ran what was regarded as a very professional and ultimately successful election campaign. His campaign team was well organised, hard working and full of energy and he won his seat by drawing support from all sections of the community.
In the 29th Dáil Deputy John Curran was appointed by the Taoiseach to be a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Education and Science Committee. Bertie Ahern also nominated him to join the National Economic and Social Forum (NESF) in 2004 and the Oireachtas Committee on Child Protection in 2006.
John was first elected as a public representative in the Local Elections in June 1999. He represented Clondalkin/Newcastle in South Dublin County Council and was an active member of the Fianna Fáil group of Councillors. John believes strongly in communicating with his constituents. This website is proof of this, as is his very popular constituency newsletter 'Community Voice'. As well as this John runs a busy constituency office and holds weekly clinics throughout Dublin Mid-West.
John is married to Shauna and they have two school-going children. John has lived all his life in what is now known as the Dublin Mid-West constituency. He is very aware of the needs of those living in the area as they affect him and his family personally. John attended local primary schools before being completing his second level education at Moyle Park College in Clondalkin. After school he was awarded a degree in Commerce from UCD. For almost twenty years he successfully ran his own business. In politics as in business John is well known for his hard work, his innovative ideas and his ability to solve problems.
John Curran has been very active in his community for many years; he rates his work with a number of successful school building projects and local sporting organisations amongst his proudest achievements. John Curran believes strongly in the value of education. He has also served on the board of management of a secondary school and he is currently a board member of a primary school attended by his children. John is a keen sports enthusiast and an active member of the GAA.
John's experiences as an elected representative have made even more aware of the real needs of people, like him and his family, who live and work in Dublin Mid-West. For John Curran Dublin Mid-West means home, it is not just a political constituency. Representing and advocating for the the people of Dublin Mid-West and gaining greater investment for improved services in the area remain amongst his highest priorities.
