Initially educated at the Presentation Sisters and Secondary School, Bandon, Gillian went on to take a B.A. in History and Political Science at Trinity College, Dublin. Elected to Bandon Town Council in 2009, Cllr Coughlan, who is currently Deputy Mayor of the town, is also a member of the Irish Walled Town Committee, Recreational & Amenities Committee, Joint Policing Committee and UDC Committee. Within the local organisation, Gillian has had the honour of holding the office of Cathaoirleach of the Sean Buckley Cumann, Bandon as well as Cathaoirleach of Bandon Comhairle Cheantair. In addition to her work as a political representative, Gillian is also on the Board of Management of the local Laragh N.S.
