Notes

First elected to Dáil Éireann in 1987. Appointed Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, May 2008

'I have now represented the constituency for over 20 years in Dáil Éireann and we have made major strides forward in that period. The Louth economy remains sound, unemployment remains low and we have manufacturing and service industries undreamt of only a decade ago. With the ongoing construction of the M1 motorway, the development of Louth ports, the Enterprise rail service and other infrastructural developments, Louth today is benefiting from its strategic position between Belfast and Dublin like never before. There is a lot more work to be done throughout Louth however, and my aim over the next five years is to place Louth at the very forefront of Ireland's development. I see no reason why Louth cannot offer the best in terms of jobs, services and Infrastructure.

When I was first elected to Dáil Éireann, Louth was one of the most economically depressed counties in Ireland, emigration was endemic and the conflict in Northern Ireland hindered any prospect of improvement. A lot has changed since that time and I see my job as ensuring it stays that way.
