Political Record

First Elected to Dublin County Council for Tallaght/Rathcoole Electoral area in 1992.
Member of South Dublin County Council in 1994. Re-elected to Council topping the
poll in Tallaght Central in 1999.
Served as Cathaoirleach South Dublin County Council 1999/2000.

Elected to the four seat Dublin South West Dail Constituency in 2002 succeeding
his friend and colleague Chris Flood. Re-elected in 2007.

In his first Dail term was Government convener on the Joint Oireachtas Committee
on Health and Children. Also served on the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social
and Family Affairs and on the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Equality,
Law Reform, Defence and Women's Rights. Was also Treasurer of the Interparliamentary
Association, Secretary of the Fianna Fail policy group on Social & Family Affairs,
Chairman of the Irish Parliamentary Friendship Group with Ukraine and Council Member
AWEPA the Parliamentary Association for Africa.


After his re-election in 2007 became Temporary Chairman of the Dáil, Chairing Dáil Sessions on behalf of the Ceann Comhairle. He is Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social & Family Affairs, member of Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health & Children and member of the British/Irish Parliamentary Assembly.

Is a former member of County Dublin VEC and served on School boards in Brookfield,
Greenhills, Killinarden, Springfield and Tallaght.

A former member of The Eastern Health Board and was founder Chairman of The South
Western Area Health Board.

At local level is a member of the board of Tallaght Welfare Society, a board member of
Tallaght Rehabilitation Project, was appointed to the board of the Tallaght Centre of the
Unemployed, is a former Chairman of Tallaght Community Council, a former chairman of
PARTAS (Get Tallaght Working) and was founder Chairman of Tallaght Mediation Bureau.

Board Member Swan Family Support Group, Tallaght and Board Member St Mary's Playgroup, Tallaght Village.

Was also long-time public relations officer of The National Community Games, Dublin
Community Games and was founder of The Inter-Tallaght Community Games.

Also served on The Planning Board of Tallaght Hospital from 1988 and was a member of
The New Hospital Board when the hospital opened in 1998.

Appointed (2007) Joint Policing Committee South Dublin County Council.

Lists his interests as Popular & Traditional Music, Sports and his Autograph Collection.

 

Personal Details

Born Dublin 9 April 1946. 3 Sons & 1 Granddaughter. Educated at Synge Street CBS & Drimnagh Castle CBS Secondary. Also did part time courses in Industrial Relations & Public Relations. Full-time public representative.
