Political Record

I grew up in a council estate and was the first person in my family to finish school and go to college. Education opened many doors for me and gave me opportunities far beyond those available to most of my neighbours. I got involved in politics at age 20 to campaign for everyone to have a fair start in life, no matter where they live or how much money their parents make.

  • Elected to Seanad Éireann in April 2011.
  • Degree in Business, Economics and Social Science from Trinity College Dublin, with a focus on finance and international relations.
  • As President of Trinity College Students Union, I led campaigns that secured major improvements for students.
  • Most recently, I’ve advised the government on policy in relation to Ireland’s most important domestic industry, tourism. I have also worked in the departments of Education & Science and Social & Family Affairs.
  • As an adviser in the Department of Education, I played a central role in developing the General Allocation Scheme for assigning extra teachers to assist children with special needs. I also helped to develop the DEIS programme of additional support for disadvantaged schools and initiate a project through which Irish teacher trainers have travelled to Zambia to help improve the quality of training provided to teachers there.
  • Involved with a wide range of community and charity projects over many years and am currently the P.R.O. of Suttonians Rugby Club.
  • Founding member and former head of policy of the Ireland For Europe campaign group.
  • I enjoy all kinds of exercise and particularly relish a challenge. I’ve cycled from Dublin to Arklow for Women’s Aid and recently took part in a charity boxing competition organized by Trinity Boys Boxing Club in Donaghmede.
