Galway East Fianna Fáil TD Micheál Kitt has warmly welcomed the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor today.
Deputy Kitt travelled on the train today on the first journey along the route since 1974.
“This is a wonderful day for the West of Ireland. To see the Western Rail Corridor open again and a rail link in operation between Galway and Limerick is a fantastic achievement.”
“When I was a member of Galway County Council I worked with Fr Michael McGreal on his inter rail committee to protect the line as much as possible following its closure.”
“The day has now come for the line to re-open and it is great to see rail connectivity through the western region.”
“I am glad that Minister Dempsey referred to his hopes to extend the line on to Tuam, Mayo and Sligo when he was in Galway today.”
“I want to encourage people to use the train as much as possible in order to give proper support to this infrastructural asset for the region. It will help in the campaign to secure the necessary funding to extend the line further north,” concluded Michael P Kitt TD.
