Local Fianna Fáil Dáil Deputy Noel Treacy TD has confirmed that funding has been allocated for flood relief works in East Galway.
The news was confirmed to him by his colleague, the Minister with Responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Dr Martin Mansergh TD.
“As a result of the unprecedented wet weather we experienced before Christmas, the Government is providing additional funding to the Office of Public Works for flood mitigation measures,” Deputy Treacy confirmed.
“Dr Martin Mansergh, the Minister with responsibility for the OPW, informed me today that funding allocated under a minor works scheme is significantly increased since last year. Last year some €2.1 million was allocated, in comparison to €6.7 million for this year.”
In East Galway the following allocations have been made:
Ahascragh Channel cleaning €45,000
Ballyglunin Chanel widening, upgrading culverts €60,000
Crowe St, Gort Channel maintenance and camera survey €36,000
Newtown, Abbeyknockmoy Improvements to piped drainage system €250,000
Cloonoo, Loughrea Construct new channel €2,000
Balydavid, Athenry/Clarin River Channel maintenance, replace culvert, remove weir €90,000
Ballinasloe Town Study Study €9,000
Turloughgarve, Corrandulla Install culvert and construct new drain €16,200
Fearagh, Caherlistrane Improvements to Corrib Clare Arterial Drainage System €115,000
Gortbeg, Cahergal, Tuam Improvements to Corrib Clare Arterial Drainage System €49,000

“Galway County Council can proceed with these approved measures now to reduce the level of risk in the communities affected.”
“The application assessment process is still ongoing and local authorities may make further applications under the scheme during the year. All applications that meet the criteria will be considered in regard to the overall resources remaining,” concluded Noel Treacy TD.
