Tánaiste welcomes investment in Donegal fire service

The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan T.D., today welcomed news from Michael Finneran T.D., Minister of State for Housing and Local Services in relation to investment which will provide 11 four wheel drive vehicles for the fire service in County Donegal.

The Tánaiste stated: “Fire-fighters are now routinely called upon to tackle a wide range of emergency situations. Incidents vary from the more traditional roles of tackling fires and rescuing people from burning buildings to dealing with floods, gorse fires, chemical spillages and dealing with the aftermath of road traffic collisions.”

Flexibility of response is key and the new four wheel drive vehicles will be a welcome addition to the response capacity of the fire service in Donegal.

They will be positioned right across the county in Carndonagh, An Fhál Carrach, An Clochán Liath, Gaoth Dobhair, Killybegs, Letterkenny, Milford, Moville, Glenties, Stranorlar/Ballybofey as well as Donegal Town.

“Tá sé den riachtainais seirbhís dóiteán nua-aimseartha agus éifeachtach a chur ar fáil ar mhaite leis an bpobal. Tacaím go láidir leis an obair atá curtha i gcrích ag an An Roinn Chomhshaoil i gcomhar leis an gComhairle Contae le blianta beaga anuas anseo i Dún na nGall chun seirbhís den scoth a chur ar fail,“ concluded the Tánaiste.

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is funding eight vehicles, with the Council providing for the remaining three. Total investment will amount to some €360,000.
