The Minister for European Affairs, Dick Roche TD, has welcomed the announcement that over 50 primary and post primary schools across the Wicklow and North East Carlow will benefit from the Summer Works scheme.
The Summer Works scheme provides funding for small and medium scale building works in the school system.
Works that have been sanctioned under the scheme include mechanical, electrical and plumbing work, roof works, windows repair/replacement, projects to facilitate inclusion and access for special needs pupils, structural work and external environmental works.
Welcoming the announcement Minister Roche said "the Summer Works Scheme is a very sensible arrangement that allows a wide range of necessary work to be carried on in schools over the summer holiday period. I would strongly urge that schools use small local businesses to carry out improvement works to the maximum extent. This year, in spite of the very difficult position with the public finances, the Government will spend €122 million across the country on this scheme. This spend is in addition to capital funding being provided for new schools and for major school extensions."
