Dick Roche TD, Minister for European Affairs, has today, Wednesday 21st April 2010 welcomed the funding allocated to the County Wicklow Network for Older People through the scheme for community and voluntary organisations to promote awareness of poverty and social exclusion and to mark 2010 the
European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in their community.
Funding has been provided to organise and hold an Older Persons Sports Festival in the first week of May 2010 to promote sports and physical activity among older people.
“The funding will contribute this new initiative for older people in County Wicklow. The idea of holding a Countywide sports event is very commendable and one that I am sure will be a success. It could be a model for other counties and for other groups that want to get active as part of this project. I am sure many local sporting groups that have developed new facilities in the County over the past few years would be only too happy to accommodate an activity as part of this festival and make the occasion a truly community affair” said Minister Roche.
