Waterford City Council will be allowed to progress to final design plans for a new fire station on Kilbarry Road to replace the current Catherine Street facility according to local TD Brendan Kenneally. Deputy Kenneally has learned that the Department of the Environment has made funding available to facilitate the drawing up of the final plans which will bring the new station a step closer to completion.
“Waterford has been in need of a new fire station for some time now so any progress towards achieving that goal has to be welcomed,” said Deputy Kenneally. “We need a top class, modern facility to improve fire safety in the city and ensure that Waterford’s firefighters have access to the very latest equipment and infrastructure.”
“As I have said about the issue of the Waterford coast guard helicopter service, we shouldn’t put a price on saving lives. By providing the funding for this design plan the City Council will now be able to move the project forward and hopefully we can then look forward to securing funding for the building and tendering process in the not too distant future.”
“It should also be remembered that the moving of the fire station from Catherine Street is critical if we want to get on with the extension of Waterford Courthouse. It’s been well documented how badly we need for the courthouse to be increased in size if we are to catch up with the backlog of cases. The sooner the work goes ahead the sooner we can look to solve that problem too,” Deputy Kenneally concluded.
