Political graffiti undermines local clean up - Minister Roche

Efforts by Bray Town Council to work with local residents groups to support the removal of graffiti around the town has been given a ‘kick in the teeth’ with the defacing of public and private property throughout the town with political graffiti, according to Dick Roche TD, Minister for European Affairs.

Over the last number of weeks black ‘Republican’ graffiti has appeared in a number of locations and last weekend a major industrial unit in the town was sprayed with political graffiti.

“At a time when the Council are taking an initiative to tackle graffiti that has been painted on walls in the town, certain political elements within our community are constantly undermining these efforts. The political nature of this new graffiti clearly identifies its political source. As we have witnessed in the past with political litter certain political elements in the town treat the efforts of the local authority with contempt and have total regard for the civic values of the people of Bray.

The repugnant actions of a small group of people should not be tolerated. Residents throughout the town have been appalled that one group in society would express their political activities through dirtying the town in the way they have. Those associated with these actions should quickly undo their handiwork and remove their graffiti from public view” said Minister Roche.
