Over €3million for Longford roads to include funding for N5 bypass - Kelly

Over €3million has been allocated to Longford County Council for Longford road under the 2010 National Roads Allocations and includes vital funding for the N5 Longford bypass according to local Fianna Fail TD Peter Kelly.

“Of that €3million allocation, €2.4 million will be for improvement works and €602,500 will go towards maintenance.”

“I am especially pleased by the allocation of €804,000 for the N5 Longford By-pass. I have lobbied continuously for the prioritisation of the N5 road in Longford in the allocation of this year’s road funding. I met with the Minister for Transport and brought a delegation in to meet the NRA.”

“The Bypass would have a very positive development for Longford, increasing road safety and decreasing journey times. The bypass is still some way off that is why it is so important that funding be allocated to progress it as much as possible this year.”

“Funding of €77,000 has been allocated for safety measures for Longford roads, including funding Newtown Forbes to remove parking and improve sightlines; the Longford Town Cathedral junction and for the Longford Town Market Square.”

“Funding for Primary Pavement and Minor Works of €656,000 will allow pavement surfacing works, weather related pavement work and work on the Ballinalee Road.”

“Work to improve safety on the National Secondary Roads will amount to €113,000 and will include work at Cranalagh; Ballymahon R292 junction to improve vision; Aghnaskea and Killashee to provide ladder markings and signage; to remove hedges and fencing completion of the scheme funded in 2008 at Grillagh and to erect traffic lights and provide a foothpath at Townparks.”

“Pavements and Minor Works will receive funding of €769,000 and will include work at Killashee Village.”

“Funding of €288,700 will be allocated for maintenance on National Primary Routes to include work on bridges, route lighting and winter maintenance.”

“National Secondary roads will also receive €313,800 for similar work.”

“Even in these difficult economic times it is important that investment in our roads continues. It is important for our economic recovery. That is why I am pleased that the Government has prioritised the N5 Longford Bypass for funding this year,” concluded Deputy Kelly.
