O’Dea calls for urgent Government action following Waterford job losses

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation Willie O’Dea TD has described as “shocking and extremely disappointing” the news that the Talk Talk call centre in Waterford city is to close with the loss of almost 600 jobs.

Deputy O’Dea said: “I am very surprised by this announcement.  It is a very significant amount of jobs to be lost in one go and with just a month’s notice for the workers. 

“In July 130 job losses were announced at GlaxoSmithKline in Dungarvan.  The news of this announcement is extremely serious and must be treated as such by the Government.  I am calling on the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton to ensure the State agencies engage with the Talk Talk management as a matter of priority and examine all options over the coming weeks.  The Minister must also ensure that the State agencies are tasked with meeting with management and workers at the facility. 

“Separately, it is imperative the Government establish a special taskforce now that will ensure there is a focus on Waterford for investment and job creation and include local expertise and high-level representatives from the State agencies.  This issue demands immediate Government attention.”

Cllr. Gary Wyse, Waterford City Council, said: “There has been concern over the future of the Talk Talk operation but this announcement will come as a major blow to the city and surrounding areas.  Talk Talk is one of the biggest employers in the south east. It is shocking enough that the entire operation is being closed down but the fact that the facility is to be closed in 30 days is very serious.

"I am asking the CEO of the company to seriously reflect on minimal notice that is being given to workers.”

Cllr Wyse concluded: “The number of people signing on the live register in Waterford City was over 15,000 in August.  The figure is double that if you include the whole county.  This announcement will only add to that figure, the cost of social welfare to the state and the anguish of the families affected.  Waterford needs to be a priority area for investment and job creation by the Government.”
