Workers in Dun Laoghaire who face unemployment or have lost their jobs are set to benefit from an additional 80 Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) places from September, according local election candidate for Dun Laoghaire, Peter O'Brien.
Welcoming the move by the Department of Education, O'Brien said: "Today's announcement is evidence of the Government's commitment to prioritising the important issues including education. Given the current economic climate, I am pleased that further education is an area being prioritised and that resources are being allocated to re-skill and up-skill those who have been affected by the downturn."
The extra allocation means that the total number of PLC places on offer for the 2009/2010 academic year countrywide will be 31,688.
"PLC courses provide the core skills needed for all employments including literacy, numeracy, communications, new technology and decision-making. They provide people with the necessary skills needed for participation in the work place and give people the confidence to make the transition."
"I would urge anyone interested in applying for a PLC course to examine the list of approved courses and centres which is available from their local school's Guidance Counsellor or their nearest Vocational Education Committee or school offering PLC courses."
"Application forms and prospectuses are available from the individual colleges and completed forms may be returned throughout the year." added O'Brien.
