The re-opening of the rail line connecting Limerick to Galway represents a significant boost for people living in East and South Galway who work in Galway City, according to East Galway Fianna Fáil Dáil Deputy Noel Treacy TD.
Welcoming the official opening of the route on the Western Rail Corridor today, Deputy Treacy said: “When I was Minister of State in the Department of Transport in the 1990s I put forward a proposal for the renewal of the Western Rail Corridor, together with a proposal for a daily commuter train from Athenry to Galway, at a joint meeting with the Boards of CIE and Iarnrod Eireann when we were launching the Western Freight Corridor at the Athenry Station.”
“It is wonderful to now see the Western Rail Corridor project come to fruition with the opening of the first phase from Galway to Limerick today.”
“This rail line will be w wonderful amenity for people living in East and South Galway who are working in Galway City.”
“I want to encourage people to use this service. The people of the west campaigned long and hard to get the Western Rail Corridor open re-opened and we must now show our support for it.”
“The line must also be continued north to County Mayo and Sligo as soon as possible. It will not only provide a new service for people living in the west, but also a great amenity for tourists visiting the region.”
“While the Western Rail Corridor may not initially prove to be a profitable project, I am glad that the Government chose to invest in it in the interests of balanced regional development. I have no doubt that it will be an asset to the west,” concluded Noel Treacy TD.
