New online service for Medical Cards & GP Visit Cards - O’Connor

Dublin South West T.D. Charlie O’Connor has welcomed the launch of www.medicalcard.ie; a new online service for GP Visit Cards and Medical with a 15 day turnaround.

“This new service from the HSE is really very welcome.  By using this website people can check if they qualify for a Medical Card or GP Visit Card and if they qualify then they can prepare their application online before submitting it with the necessary documents.”

“This will make a difference to a large number of people and I’m glad the HSE is moving to make services more accessible,” said Deputy O’Connor who is members of the Joint Committee on Health and Children.

“The HSE also says that fully completed applications will be fast tracked and cards will be issued within 15 days.  This is very important for families, older people and those with long term illness and will relieve considerable stress.”

“I have come across many cases over the years where people had to make a written application to find out if they were eligible for a medical card.  This would sometimes take months.  This service will help people find out very quickly if they are able to get a medical card or a GP Visit Card.  But it’s important people know that they will still be able to apply for medical cards and discretionary medical cards in their local health offices.”

“I’m glad to see the HSE has also put in place a phone line to help people if they have difficulty getting around the website, it’s 1890-252-919.  I look forward to hearing from my constituents how the new website is working and if any improvements can be made to help them,” concluded Deputy O’Connor.
