The Minister for Lifelong Learning, Mr. Seán Haughey, TD today presented FETAC Certificates to over 20 students, the first group of students who studied through
www.writeon.ie, the NALA distance learning scheme.
The presentation took place at the National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin during National Adult Literacy Awareness Week organised by NALA.
Speaking about NALA's commitment to highlighting and promoting services to learners Minister Haughey said
‘NALA perform a very important role in highlighting the adult literacy services available and promoting the needs of the sector.
‘It is of utmost importance that those who may not have been lucky enough to be in a position to avail of the educational opportunities earlier in life are provided with a means to take advantage of a second chance.
‘NALA has been using multi-media as a means to provide distance education opportunities to literacy learners since 2000.
‘The use of technology within an educational setting to enable distance learning can make a huge difference in reducing barriers to participation in education.
‘Distance learning also provides the opportunities for people to learn in a comfortable and familiar environment, which makes learning easier,' said Minister Haughey.
‘It can be used to overcome barriers where access to learning opportunities may be hindered for a number of reasons, such as geographical or social isolation.
‘It allows flexible access for classes to suit learners' needs with regard to family, work and other obligations,' the Minister concluded.
Minister Haughey congratulated all those receiving certificates and wished them every success in their personal lifelong learning journeys.
