Welcoming the official opening, which is to be conducted by the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD, Deputy Conlon said the M3 will improve accessibility to the North East region and make travelling to Dublin much easier for people from the region.
“The opening of the 61km M3 motorway today is a great day for the North East region. Bypassing the towns of Kells, Navan, Dunshaughlin and Dunboyne, it will make the journey to Dublin much easier from Cavan and will improve accessibility to Meath and Cavan.
“At a cost of €1 billion the road is one of the country’s largest road projects and its opening today will be welcomed by the thousands of people who live in the region, particularly those who commute to Dublin for work. This is one of the busiest commuter routes in the country and the opening of this road is long overdue. The M3 will improve their quality of life, allowing them to get home earlier in the evenings and cutting down their commuting times,” she said.
This year alone, €1,114 million has been allocated for national roads. In 2010, a total of nine national road projects will be completed and, by the end of the year the five major inter-urban motorways totalling 740km will be complete.
