Labour Party attempts to rewrite history on Budget support – Byrne

The Labour Party has today attempted to rewrite history by claiming that it supported the Government in the recent Budget, according to Meath East Fianna Fáil TD Thomas Byrne.

In a bizarre move, the Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore told the Dáil today: “We supported it (the Government) on the fiscal adjustment.”

Thomas Byrne TD said: “This claim by Eamon Gilmore comes as a considerable surprise to us all and will especially surprise Labour supporters. Budget 2010 introduced a number of hard but necessary measures to achieve the necessary adjustment. The notion that the Labour Party showed any kind of support for these actions at the time is simply not true, as anyone could attest.”

“Since the Budget, Ireland has shown signs of stability and has won high praise internationally for taking decisive action. The Labour Party, however, has to date been extremely critical of each and every one of these actions. By claiming now that they supported Government measures in the Budget is simply a bizarre and unbelievable attempt to rewrite history,” he concluded.
