Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore has this morning exposed his party’s contradictory stance on the new 30 km speed limit in Dublin City Centre, according to Fianna Fail TD for Dublin South East, Chris Andrews. Despite the fact that the new limit is the brainchild of Labour Councillor Andrew Montague, Eamon Gilmore today slammed the measure on Newstalk radio saying it was "impractical." Deputy Gilmore said that the measure was misguided and suggested that it would actually make the roads less safe. Responding to this, Deputy Andrews said: "Eamon Gilmore’s unequivocal opposition to the new speed limit, which is essentially a Labour party initiative, shows that the Party is very much at odds over this issue. For Councillor Montague to have championed this new measure for so long, only to be shot down immediately by his own party leader, shows that there is a clear disconnect within Labour. Deputy Andrews added : "Given the controversy that has surrounded the new speed limit, it would be helpful if Labour, the very party that proposed this measure, would clarify their position on it."
