Deputy Michael P. Kitt has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, TD of 30 countrywide Sustainable Travel Projects under the Smarter Travel Project Fund which will provide €15m of funding over 5 years.
The projects cover a range of initiatives such as:
• Supporting the roll out of electric vehicles;
• Developing an eco-driving scheme for a local authority captive fleet;
• A study to help make the delivery of freight in core urban areas more sustainable;
• The delivery of cycling infrastructure such as cycle routes and cycle parking;
• A wide range of behavioural based projects aimed at persuading schools, workplaces, and communities to make more sustainable and healthy travel choices;

Galway Cycling Campaign: Image of cycling in Galway €28,600
Galway County Council: Integrated walking & cycling Strategy €703,000
Galway Chamber of Commerce: Cycle parking fund €406,000
Galway Chamber of Commerce: Workplace cycle champions €8,250
This fund is to encourage innovation in implementing the Government’s new policy for travel which aims to obtain a sustainable transport system by 2020, concluded Michael Kitt, TD.
