Kitt welcomes emphasis on education investment in Budget 2010

Galway East Fianna Fáil TD Micheal Kitt has welcomed the strong funding commitment made in the area of education in Budget 2010.

Deputy Kitt said that it is vital that the Government continues to prioritise the area of education.

“Frontline services in schools have been protected in the Budget for next year with some €26 million being provided to meet the costs of employing up to 500 extra teachers over the next three years to meet the needs in areas with growing populations.”

“Despite the very severe economic circumstances currently the capital building programme will continue to be prioritised with some €794 million allocated for next year.”

“The construction market is very competitive right now and it is only right that the Government continues investment in this area because it allows us to get maximum return for the taxpayer and it also helps us to support jobs in construction.”

“The school building programme will be complemented by an investment of €50 million in Information Communications Technology in school classrooms.”

“I am also personally delighted that funding has also been provided for 28 additional NEPS psychologists in the Budget. NEPS is a very important service provided in schools now. The earlier we can help children with special needs and learning difficulties, the easier it is for them to learn effectively.”

“Some €141 million has also been earmarked to fund investment in higher education including €46 million for the promotion of science and innovation.”

“The Government have had to make savings across the board in all Departments including Education, but the Government’s commitment to the education sector is right. We must continue to invest in our young people and in the future economy,” concluded Michael Kitt TD.
