Kennedy welcomes Government commitment to Metro North and Dart Underground

The Government’s commitment to continue with the Metro North Project and Dart Underground are good news for the people of North Dublin, according to Dublin North TD Michael Kennedy. Deputy Kennedy was speaking after the Government reiterated their plans to continue with the two multi billion euro rail projects, despite having to cut €1 billion from the overall capital spending budget.

“There were some fears that these projects would be put on hold because of the need to make savings, however the Government has offered reassurances that they will continue with the Metro North and the Dart Underground as planned,” said Deputy Kennedy. “This is very good news for the people of North Dublin as it will have a massive impact on public transport throughout the city and county.”

“Not only will it make it a lot easier for commuters coming from areas like Swords and travelling into town, it will also encourage more tourists to travel out to the further reaches of Dublin and see all that we have to offer in North Dublin. The Metro will be particularly important as it will go to Dublin Airport and that will also encourage more people to use the airport and provide a greater range of transport options.”

“We also need to consider the great boost this will give to the local economy as the investment comes on stream. The construction of these projects will create thousands of jobs through the construction and running of these operations and I am delighted that the Government has heard the strong lobbying efforts we have made and agreed to proceed with these vital pieces of rail infrastructure,” Deputy Kennedy concluded.
