Joint statement by Dr Jimmy Devins TD and Eamon Scanlon TD

We had a long meeting with the Taoiseach today to outline to him in detail our concerns regarding the removal of Breast Cancer Services from Sligo General Hospital to University College Hospital Galway on Thursday next, August 6th.

We presented an alternative to the transfer of services to Galway to the Taoiseach that we feel would serve the needs of the people of the North West and also bring the service at Sligo into line with the highest of international practices.

The establishment of a clinical network between Sligo and Galway would meet this criteria well, we feel.

The Taoiseach listened attentively to our presentation and gave us an undertaking to give it careful consideration. We are expecting that he will revert to us with his decision in a matter of days.
