Longford Fianna Fáil TD, Peter Kelly has welcomed the signing today of contracts for the restoration of St. Mel’s Cathedral which was destroyed by fire at Christmas.
“The contracts for the restoration of St. Mel’s Cathedral were signed today and it is an important milestone in the long journey to have the church rebuilt.”
“The initial work on drawing up plans will now begin but it will be some time before work begins on site.”
“I am delighted with this news and the news that the insurance money will cover the cost of the restoration.”
“It is thought that the work will take four to five years but the important thing is that it is beginning now without delay and that the funds are there to cover it.”
“The fire at St. Mel’s was devastating for so many people in Longford who had such happy memories associated with the Church. The loss of artefacts and art work was also very upsetting but it was very lucky that the church was empty at the time so no one was injured or killed.”
“I would like to pay tribute to all including Seamus Butler who Chaired the restoration committee and Bishop Colm O’Reilly who worked so hard who worked so speedily to ensure that the restoration proceeded without delay,” concluded Deputy Kelly.
