Kinsale Town Cllr Michael Frawley, has extended his best wishes to local man, John Twomey, who is taking part in the upcoming Paralympics in London.
Mr Twomey is no stranger to glory on the world stage having already secured a bronze medal in the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and a gold medal at the Seoul Games in 1988 at the discus event. This year he will compete in the Sonar Sailing Class at the London Games.
Joined by two other members of the Kinsale Yacht Club, Ian Costello and Anthony Hearty, the men have spent the last twelve months preparing for the competition under the watchful-eye of world-renowned sailing coach, Simon Wheeler.
“Having already secured a top five finish in the World Championship this year, the men are confident of launching a significant challenge to the three frontrunners in the competition, including GB, Holland and Norway.
“John is a tremendous role model to all those who need to overcome adversity in their lives.
“Despite being confined to a wheelchair as a result of a cycling accident in 1970, John has taken up the challenge and in addition to a successful career in accountancy and sport; John has been the main driving force behind the success of Kinsale's twinning with Newport Rhodes Island, USA, and Antibes, France.
"On behalf of the people in the town, I wish him all the best,” concluded Cllr Frawley.
