Fahey confirms Government funding for Regional and Local Roads in Galway City and County

Galway West Fianna Fáil TD and Chairman of the Oireachtas Transport Committee Frank Fahey has confirmed funding under the 2010 Regional and Local Road Grant Allocations for Galway City and County.

“The allocation for County Galway in the 2010 Regional and Local Roads Programme is €23,101,894,” Deputy Fahey said.

“The Galway City Council allocation is €3,725,000. This is an increase of 123 per cent on last year’s allocation.”

“In addition to selected routes, these allocations will go towards projects such as maintenance programmes together with substantial grants for local improvement schemes in the constituency."

“Measures such as improving road safety, footpath provision and signposting are also catered for under these grants."

“This funding follows the allocation of €178,899,000 to Galway County Council and €630,900 to Galway City Council under the 2010 National Roads Allocation earlier this month.”

"Given the major constraints on exchequer funding this year, the allocation to local and regional roads in the city and county is extremely welcome. The Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, has indicated that more flexibility will be given to local authorities to direct funding to specific priorities, in particular, to stretches of road damaged by the recent spell of severe weather," concluded Frank Fahey TD.
