Local Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has received confirmation from the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey T.D. that the Department of Transport will fund 50% of the land costs associated with the planned Carrigaline Western Relief Road. Cork County Council has committed to providing the remaining 50%.
‘This is great news for Carrigaline and is a major step forward towards the development of the western relief road. I have been working closely with Minister Noel Dempsey behind the scenes on this issue for some time now and I am delighted that he has fully backed the project.
‘The confirmation of funding for the land costs will now enable the Council to go ahead and serve the compulsory purchase orders (CPO’s) on the affected landowners. This is a very significant milestone towards the development of this relief road. People can now have confidence that the road project will go ahead.
‘Once developed, the western relief road will help to alleviate the traffic congestion on Carrigaline’s main street and will facilitate a major expansion of the town centre. The Department’s financial support for the CPO process is very significant for two reasons. Firstly, it enables the land required for the road to be acquired and, secondly, it is a strong indication that the Department will provide capital funding for the construction of the road once the Council reaches that stage.
‘The town of Carrigaline has expanded greatly in recent years. This new road will help to address the town’s infrastructure deficit and will enable the town centre to grow beyond the main street in years to come.
‘I would like to compliment the senior officials of Cork County Council who have engaged so constructively with the Department of Transport on the issue. I will continue to work with the Department and the Council to ensure this project proceeds,’ stated Deputy McGrath.
