Dempsey urges public to take extra precautions on our roads during cold snap

Today, the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD, urged all motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to take extra precautions when travelling on our roads during the current cold snap. Met Eireann has forecast wintry showers of sleet and snow to affect parts of Ulster, Connacht, north Leinster and west Munster tonight. Over the coming days and into the early part of next week, showers of sleet and snow are forecast for many areas, with the northern half of the country and western counties most at risk.

Speaking today, Minister Dempsey said : “Widespread severe frosts often lead to icy roads. It can take much longer to stop a vehicle on icy roads, so slow down and allow a safe extra distance between you and the vehicle in front. Snowfall will reduce visibility, so use dipped headlights and decrease your speed.”

The Minister continued: “Visibility is reduced for everyone in snow and foggy conditions. Pedestrians should keep to footpaths and wear high visibility clothing or carry a torch. Cyclists should ensure your bicycle has the appropriate lights and to ensure they are working correctly. I urge all road users to listen to the advice of the Gardai and RSA and to heed warning signs on our roads.“

The Minister concluded: “During this cold snap, I urge everyone to be extra alert when using our roads. Remember; other roads users may not expect you, so slow down, be alert and always expect the unexpected when driving, cycling or walking.”
