Delgany and Greystones must be allowed to retain their individual character: Roche

“It is surprising to read that the issue of some form of amalgamation between the towns of Delgany and Greystones has arisen again”.

This issue was resolved in 1984 when, prior to the establishment of the Greystones Town Council boundary, residents in both communities were consulted as to where the boundary between Greystones and Delgany should have been made.

At that time people in Delgany made the point that Greystones and Delgany have historically always been treated as two separate entities and that situation should continue to be the case. There has been no indication of community support in either Greystones or Delgany for a change in that situation. It is surprising, that Councillors who should be concerning themselves with other matters should be even thinking about raising this issue again.

The points made by Delgany Community Council are coherent and logical. The unique character of both towns should be preserved both in planning and in administration. Any suggestion that both towns should be “amalgamated” for either bureaucratic or administrative purposes is a disservice to both communities and one which I would utterly oppose” Minister Roche said.
