Defence Forces on standby to assist with weather conditions if required - O’Dea

The Minister for Defence Mr. Willie O’Dea TD is advising all local authorities that the Defence Forces are on standby to assist with dealing with the severe weather conditions if required.

 

A meeting of the Government’s Inter-Departmental Emergency Co-ordinationg Group has concluded at the National Emergency Co-ordination Centre and a further meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

 

Minister O’Dea has spoken with his Military officials to convey his wishes for the Defence Forces and to ensure all brigades are put on standby with immediate effect.

 

In terms of taskings, the Defence Forces can assist with general emergency transportation of foodstuffs, medicines, goods and personnel. Air patrols are also available.

 

With more than 3,000 drivers and up to 800 vehicles including Air support, MOWAG and 4x4 ambulances available, the Defence Forces are equipped to assist should the local authorities request DF assistance. Air Ambulance missions have been undertaken in the South of the Country over the past 24 hours.

 

The Civil Defence is also on standby.

 

It is the responsibilty of the each local authority to request the assistance of the Defence Forces.
