Speaking in advance of the anniversary, Senator Daly said, “I’m delighted that the introduction of Fairtrade products throughout the Oireachtas has been a complete success over the past year. It’s vital that we continue to use and promote Fair Trade products. It is part of the Government’s commitment in the Programme for Government to use Fair Trade products where possible and it will make a major impact in less fortunate parts of the world.”
“Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and local sustainability throughout the developing world. It is about fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in these countries. It is something that should be encouraged and I hope the example of the Oireachtas will see more Irish people use Fairtrade products and help ensure those in the developing world get a fair deal,” Senator Daly concluded.
Complementary Fair Trade tea and coffee will be served in Leinster House on Thursday the 26th of February to mark the anniversary and Fair Trade Fortnight. Peter Gaynor, Director of Fairtrade Mark Ireland, Dunstan Bourke, Financial Administrator for Fairtrade Mark Ireland and John Nuwagaba, General Manager of the Ankole Coffee Producers Cooperative Union, Uganda will be in attendance.
