Corrigan urges people in difficulty to reach out

Dublin South Fianna Fáil Senator Maria Corrigan has urged anyone facing financial difficulties to reach out to support services.

“I was deeply shocked to hear details today from the inquest into a woman who took her own life after experiencing financial difficulties.  I spoke on this issue in the Seanad this morning and I strongly believe that nothing, particularly financial issues, is worth a life.”

“I am acutely aware that the Government has, in some cases, contributed to the hardship being faced by people as a result of the measures needed to correct the State’s finances.  However, life is precious and nothing is worth the taking your life over.  It’s important to remember that these times will pass and life for our citizens will get better.”

“I hope the measures we take as a Government will begin to ease pressures on people.  I want to say to anyone in difficulty that you should reach out.  There are a number of very helpful resources available.”

“Life is precious and I urge people under pressure to talk about their difficulties with someone, their GP or by contacting support agencies: Samaritans on 1850 609090, Aware 01-6617211; 1890 303 302.  A new Helpline for people at risk of suicide has been recently set up on 1 800 247 100.”
