A consultant report on the Dunkellin River and areas surrounding it is to be completed by June, according to local Fianna Fáil Dáil Deputy Noel Treacy TD.
This information was confirmed to Deputy Treacy by his colleague, the Minister with Responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Dr Martin Mansergh TD.
“I have been working closely with Minister Mansergh since the devastating flooding from the Dunkellin River last year and I am happy that he has now confirmed that action is being taken to investigate what mitigation measures would best suit areas bordering the Dunkellin River.”
“I have been in touch with many affected groups and I know that this update will be welcomed by them.”
“The OPW and Galway County Council established a Joint Working Group in December last to examine the causes of the flooding and to identify interim flood mitigation measures.”
“At its first meeting the Group drew up an initial action plan on which it would focus its attention and identified a programme of maintenance and improvement works including a focus on the Dunkellin Drainage System, including the Dunkellin River.”
“The OPW is now in the process of engaging consultants to examine and report on the flood alleviation measures identified by the Joint Working Group.”
“It is expected that the consultant’s report will be completed by June and then the OPW will start with the works recommended, following a consultation process with all local residents and stakeholders,” concluded Noel Treacy TD.
