Construction on the new emergency department at Kerry General Hospital has begun according to Kerry North Fianna Fáil TD Thomas McEllistrim. Deputy McEllistrim was informed by the HSE that the building contractors, BAM Building Ltd, have moved ont site and preliminary ground works have commenced.
The new emergency department will feature a resuscitation room, additional treatment and observation facilities and special facilities for children.
As a result of the work being carried out, access to the current emergency department has changed and the public are encouraged to note the directional signage when entering the hospital campus. The public can enter the department via the external church corridor door. Access for outpatient appointments and visiting remains unchanged via the main entrance.
Speaking about the construction work, Deputy McEllistrim said, “I’m delighted that work has now begun on the new emergency department and that the building contractors are on site at the hospital. Kerry General Hospital has been needing this new facility for some time and I know a lot of people will be happy to see the project progress.”
“Unfortunately the construction work will have a knock on impact on the various entrances to the hospital. Entrance to the existing emergency department has changed and members of the public are advised to follow the directional signage in place on the hospital campus. However the main entrance and the public car park will still be in operation and members of the public will still be able to make use of them when required.”
“Hopefully now that the building work is underway we won’t be waiting long before the new facility is in place, caring for the emergency needs of patients from all over Kerry,” Deputy McEllistrim concluded.
