Comparing severe weather conditions to Haiti Earthquake is unforgiveable - Dooley

Fianna Fáil TD for Clare Timmy Dooley has said that for Labour TD Tommy Broughan to compare the situation in this country during the recent bad weather with that of Haiti is unforgiveable.

"Speaking in the Dáil Transport Committee today (20 January 2010) on the recent severe weather conditions Deputy Broughan compared the Government’s response to that of the Haitian government in the wake of the devastating earthquake there last week. That is unforgiveable. I appreciate the bad weather has had a huge impact on communities around the country over the past month. Some people have been literally snowed in for weeks and many of our roads were treacherous due to extreme weather conditions. However, to compare the situation in Haiti where we are told the death toll could rise to 200,000 is insensitive and irresponsible."

"Haiti has suffered one of the worst humanitarian disasters in decades and to make light of this to score a few political points is disgraceful", concluded Deputy Dooley.
