Local Cavan Artist and County Councillor, Niamh Smyth has begun her latest exhibition in the Courthouse in Cavan Town. As part of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2010, Niamh along with 9 other Cavan artists have been commission by Mórtas an Chabhán to install temporary art pieces throughout Cavan town.
This installation uses a translucent material and gold leaf to contextualise her interest in mapping and location. The main elements of art in this installation explore line, pattern, shape and texture. The use of translucent material is suggestive of the ever evolving architectural landscape of Cavan town.
In a time that is preoccupied with globalisation – Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann provides and opportunity to engage people in localisation. Identity and how we as a county have developed since the start of the 20th Century to the present is an ongoing concern in this piece of work.
Niamh Smyth’s installation in Cavan Courthouse along with the other 9 installations will remain in place until after the end of Fleadh 2010 on 22 August 2010.
Niamh Smyth is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design and holds a Masters of Arts in Visual Arts Practice from the Institute of Art & Design in Dun Laoghaire.
