Chris Andrews, outgoing Fianna Fail TD for Dublin South East, has called on the European Union to step up international pressure to support the human rights protestors in Libya.
The response of the UN has been “entirely ineffectual,” he said today.
“It is clear that Gadaffi is going to attempt to cling on to power regardless of the cost to the people of Libya who are been massacred and the situation is escalating by the hour.”
“This poor response from the UN follows its appalling performance last August when peace keeping officials in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) failed to prevent a horrific mass rape attack which happened just 30km from the UN base in the region.”
“The legitimacy of the UN’s reputation as a force for the protection of human rights and peacekeeping is, in my opinion seriously in question and I believe the leaders of the members of the European Union must bring immediate pressure to bear to prevent any further bloodshed.”
“The EU needs to act swiftly and strongly and impose sanctions on Libya, letting the people of Libya and the international community know that it stands by the people in their desire for human rights,” he said.
