€36 million for Limerick Regional Hospital - Power

The Critical Care block for Limerick Regional Hospital has been given the go ahead for construction following the Budget, according to local TD and Minister for State, Peter Power. Minister Power has learnt that the project will now get underway in 2010 with a view to being completed in 2012. A total of €36 million will be spent on the project.

The new unit will include 12 intensive care beds and 10 high dependency beds. This represents 9 additional beds being put in place. Additionally a new theatre will be put into operation next year as part of the project.

Speaking about this news Minister Power said, “The provision of this funding is a victory for everyone interested in healthcare in Limerick. It will have a major impact on the quality of care provided and will mean more hospital beds are in place in the Regional Hospital.”

“This is a considerable investment in the Regional Hospital and it is all the more significant given the tight economic position we are in this year. The €36 million provided will not only provide better facilities in the Regional Hospital but should also be a boost to the local economy.”

“More important though is the impact this will have on patients from all over Limerick. The additional beds that will be provided and the extra theatre we will see in place will mean that more people will receive an even better standard of care and treatment. This will undoubtedly make a major difference to the lives of hundreds of people in the years to come as well as their families and friends,” Minister Power concluded.
