€3.8 million funding for Dunkellin River Funding very welcome – Treacy

The allocation today of €3.85 million in funding to reduce flooding from the Dunkellin River is very welcome, according to Galway East Fianna Fáil Dáil Deputy Noel Treacy TD.

The money has been sanctioned by his colleague the Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Dr. Martin Mansergh, TD.

“I have been working closely with Minister Mansergh since the devastating flooding from the Dunkellin River last year and I am happy that he has now confirmed this significant funding for flood mitigation measures.”

“Minister Mansergh visited the area himself both last and this year and he saw firsthand the devastation suffered by so many people as a result of the flooding. The OPW and Galway County Council established a Joint Working Group in December last to examine the causes of the flooding and a scheme has now been agreed.

“The planning process will begin immediately with a view to commencing works next year, subject to satisfactory completion of this planning process.

“The feasibility of commencing elements of works on the Aggard Stream and Cregaclare in advance of the main scheme will be pursued again by the Joint Working Group. I hope that all interests and property owners can find common ground for this vital project.

“The works will be carried out by the Office of Public Works in cooperation with the Council”, concluded Noel Treacy TD.
