The European Commission in Brussels today has announced that the number of students that have now participated on the EU Erasmus educational exchange programme since it was first set up in 1987 has exceeded 2 million people.

Brian Crowley MEP said that " the Erasmus programme is an example of a great European success story. It has afforded the opportunity to so many people to go and study in another European country as part of their third level education. This has helped to ensure that the students who take part on the Erasmus programme have been able to improve their language skills aswell.

Every year 2,000 students from Ireland take part on the Erasmus programme. 160,000 people from all the countries in the EU and neighbouring states have participated on the EU Erasmus programme during the academic year 2007/2008."
