Dublin North T.D. Michael Kennedy has welcomed the main provisions of the legislation being drafted regarding regulation of sunbed use.
“I’m delighted the Government has approved a large scale series of provisions for this legislation. Primarily the new law will prohibit the sale or hire of sunbeds to anyone under 18; ban the use of sunbeds in an unsupervised premises; require warning signs for the premises and the sunbeds themselves; and require consent forms to be completed before anyone uses sunbeds in commercial premises.”
“This is very important legislation from a public health and safety point of view. I have long campaigned for strong action on this as part of the overall cancer control agenda. Sunbeds pose incredible dangers to public health and their use must be strictly regulated.”
“There has been a growing body of evidence over recent years, that the use of sunbeds, especially by children, should be restricted because of the risks of skin cancer and other health effects. It is expected that this new Bill will be introduced in the autumn,” concluded Deputy Kennedy.
