Government increases Emergency Supplies for Haiti - Minister Micheál Martin, TD

The Government is releasing an extra 40 tonnes of emergency supplies for Haiti to help combat the threat of disease following the devastating earthquake, according to Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin TD.

“This additional aid follows the airlift of 80 tonnes of Irish Government supplies last week and of course the countless aid and expertise provided by the fundraising efforts of people throughout the country.”

“Since the quake two weeks ago the Irish Government has airlifted items to provide shelter and water for victims of the quake as well as the provision of mosquito nets to prevent the spread of disease.”

“Three members of the Rapid Response Corps remain in the disaster area while a further team of three experts we deployed to Haiti to assess the situation are preparing to report back on what more Ireland can do.”

“My Department has received many calls from people asking how they can help, there are two websites which I would encourage everyone to look at www.irishaid.ie and www.howyoucanhelp.ie.”

“It is clear that Haiti will need long term assistance to recover from the unimaginable devastation caused by this disaster and at EU level I am continuing to work to ensure that Europe plays its part, not just in these immediate weeks but into the future.”

“I want again to pay tribute to people throughout the country who have been clearly moved by the horrific images from Haiti and are continuing to fundraise and support the efforts of our aid agencies”, concluded Minister Martin.
