Byrne appointment is fantastic boost for Ireland – Kennedy

Fianna Fáil Dublin North TD Michael Kennedy, Vice-Chairman of the Joint Committee on Arts, Sport, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, has today welcomed the appointment of Gabriel Byrne as the first Cultural Ambassador for Ireland.

“Gabriel Byrne is an internationally renowned actor whose work has been recognised with many awards.  He is already one of Ireland’s great ambassadors through his work in film and theatre, as well as his endeavours behind the scenes in supporting and promoting Irish artists,” said Deputy Kennedy.

“As Cultural Ambassador, Gabriel Byrne, will be working closely with the Government, Culture Ireland and artistic bodies to develop an artistic vision that’s inclusive of the Irish diaspora.  Gabriel Byrne has a lot to bring to this role, he is a committed Irishman and his personal story is one of great success.  I want to wish him well in his new role,” said Deputy Kennedy.

The Government is very keen to recognise the global importance of Ireland's culture and the impact that can have for our economy.  This was one of the main conclusions at the Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh last year.

“Gabriel Byrne has already played a key role in developing the concept for an ambitious season of Irish arts in America next year which is being organised by Culture Ireland,” concluded Deputy Kennedy.
