Anglo investigation must not be disrupted by Appleby retirement – O’Dea

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Willie O’Dea has paid tribute to Paul Appleby, the Director of Corporate Enforcement, following the announcement that he is to retire from his position.

“I want to thank Paul Appleby for his long service to the public in many roles and latterly as Director of Corporate Enforcement.

“I will be raising the issue of this vacancy arising at the ODCE with Minister Bruton as a matter of urgency. The office is currently engaged in extremely complex and detailed investigations, not least the investigation in Anglo Irish Bank.

“Fianna Fáil has already raised with Justice Minister Alan Shatter the fact that there are now less than half the Gardaí working on the criminal investigation into activities in Anglo than a year ago. I want the Government to immediately prioritise the replacement of Mr Appleby. A seamless transition at the ODCE is extremely important for its ongoing work and for the country.

“Minister Bruton must address this issue with the urgency it requires.”
