Irish people show generosity on Haiti - Niall Blaney TD

I never cease to be amazed by the kindness and generosity of the Irish people. The response to the recent cold snap, with people pulling together and helping their neighbours, was a clear reminder that community spirit is very much alive and well. Moreover, it would appear that this strong sense of solidarity also extends to the suffering of others regardless of where they are in the world. Every time there is a major disaster or tragedy, the Irish are among the first to offer their help. As the Irish Government pledged €600, 000 yesterday to help survivors of the earthquake in Haiti, Goal and Trocaire were being praised for their work on the ground there. It was heart-warming to read reports in today’s papers that charity drives for Haiti were receiving a very positive response. Some people have given over their whole pension cheques while others have offered up their rent-relief money. According to UNICEF, the young and old alike are ringing emergency lines to donate whatever they can. In times of both boom and bust, the Irish people’s generosity of spirit has never been found wanting.
