Seán Lemass Quotes

One Nation – A speech delivered by An Taoiseach, Seán Lemass, at a meeting of the Oxford Union Society on October 15 1959.

ONE NATION

“It is, indeed, the simple truth that Ireland is one nation, in its history, in its geography and in its people, entitled to have its essential unity expressed in its political institutions.”

Address by Taoiseach Seán Lemass to the Cambridge University Liberal Club, 31 January 1960. Seán Lemass

Role of Small Nations in the United Nations

“Irish public opinion as a whole is proud of the part which our representatives have played on the world stage of the United Nations, and expects to learn that our voice and influence are used whenever fundamental national and human rights are in danger. Our public expect, and it is the policy of the Irish Government to ensure, that our influence and voting power in the Assembly will always be used to promote agreements between the Great Powers, in the knowledge that it is on the avoidance of conflicts between them that world peace and possibly the survival of the human species depend.”

Ireland in the New Europe – 33rd Ard-Fheis

The case for Irish membership of the European Economic Council (Irish Press, November 21 1962).

From the very outset we foresaw the inevitability – and the logic – of the economic union developing a political character, even if others are now pretending to be surprised that it should be so. For our part we welcomed the prospect of the negotiation of an agreement for European political integration – not solely because of its inevitably, nor because it was necessary to make the economic union work, nor because we recognised that the economic and political affairs of nations could not be maintained in water-tight compartments, but, because we saw in this prospect a new source of national strength, an extension of our freedom, and a better opportunity of fulfilling our cultural, economic and social aims.

Seán Lemass on the Irish people

“There is almost nothing on earth that the people of this country cannot do better, or as well, as other people, once they apply their minds to it.”
